Belle Isle 500

The GATE Community Resource Centre in Belle Isle hosted the inaugural Belle Isle 500 competition awards ceremony on Tuesday December 5th.

Belle Isle 500 is a short story competition for key stage 2 pupils in the area and this year involved pupils from Windmill Primary School, Low Road Primary School and Clapgate Primary School.

The event has been organised by Community Theatre Group and has been supported by Belle Isle TMO, Mears and students from Leeds Beckett University. This was the first time the competition has been held and there were over 150 entries from the 3 schools involved.

Belle Isle 500 kicked off on November 8th when students from Leeds Beckett University visited each primary school and delivered a morning of creative writing and drama activities to pupils from years 5 and 6. The activities were designed to inspire the pupils to write! The pupils were then given a deadline for entries and over 150 pupils submitted their entries to the competition.

There were 10 shortlisted stories with the authors being invited to the glitzy awards ceremony in the GATE where 5 extra special winners were announced.

It was a fabulous occasion with food being provided and five of the stories being read out to the assembled audience by the pupils themselves.

Each of the 5 winning stories will be published on the South Leeds Life website next week!
